Your business blog must have a purpose

Although having a purpose in your blog and in everything you do is what I like to call common sense many of us tend to overlook it. We never leave our home without knowing where are we going and we never enter a store without knowing what we want to buy. And still we forget this simple lesson when it comes to blogging. We think it’s easy to write some articles and we tend to pay less attention to planing and thinking to a purpose.

How to establish the purpose of your business blog

You must have a purpose in your business : either you’re trying to offer the best services in your market or you want to make people smile or to offer a quality way to spend an evening in your restaurant or a weekend in your hotel. All these purposes are higher then money. Usually when you work hard to achieve something that is not direct related to money you’ll succeed. Money will eventually come as an indirect consequence of what you do. A purpose should be stated in one simple phrase and it should contain the essence of what you want to do. Business blogs are no different then other departments of your company. It needs to have a purpose defined : you have to have something to fight for. All the planing and all the articles you’re gonna write will be to fulfill that purpose.
Finding the purpose of your business blog it’s not always simple and sometimes it’s very hard to make the difference between a purpose and a goal. A simple way to think at this would be the following : look at your business purpose. Then ask the question : “how does my blog help me achieve that purpose ? “. Write down all your ideas on how do you think a blog might help you and try to organize it all. The categories you’ll have are based on your business market : customer services/products support, expend the number of situations on which using your products or services might help, obtain better feedback from your customers and so on.
Basically the business blog’s purpose should be one of the business goals. You might want more exposure on the Internet or to establish a solid position on the Internet in what your market segment is or just to provide client support on a modern way and trying to reach those clients that are used to use the Internet more often.
Establishing your purpose might come as a sum of your goals or, if you know the business very well, the goals will come by brainstorming on how to achieve the purpose. In my opinion, I think that it doesn’t matter the process you follow to obtain all the answers : it only matters the result and that is having a purpose for your business blog and a few goals that you must achieve in order to fulfill your purpose.

Why having a purpose is so important

I’ll start this by saying that NOT having a purpose will only lead to nothing : you won’t be able to establish your goals, plan the articles, create a web marketing strategy. If you’re not able to do all these your business blog will lack consistency. Your articles will be chaotic and the general message that you would like your clients to receive will not be there. As you can see I’m not telling you why it’s important to have a purpose because this is more then obvious. I’m just saying that NOT having one can only do you wrong.

To conclude this short article : having a Purpose and a few Goals for your business blog can only lead to better article planing, better web marketing strategy, better keyword targeting planing. It can only do you good. So take a little time and think of this if you didn’t do it before.
