The Internet is no longer a sorrow place : social media brought a drop of human personality and changed forever the way we create and develop relationships. We are no longer constrained to our town or country : now we ca have friends and develop B2B relations all over the world. The incredible power and freedom that social media offers has created new opportunities for marketing your services, making new friends, exchanging information and also created social media power – measured in how big is your influence and how many ears are listening to your voice.

What can you do with Social Media

All the social networks were created with a single purpose and that was to bring people together using different ways of interacting. In time every social network has develop and gathered millions of accounts – and soon many saw business opportunities in all the social networks. It was inevitable for this to happen. Every social network has it’s own kind of business component and every component behaves differently in terms of rules, ways of interaction, ways of getting new clients and ways of spreading the word about yourself. The most powerful social tool that you could ever use is your blog. The reason for this evolution of blogs is because this kind of publishing your articles on the Internet is very personal. The blog software is easy to use and ease to surf by readers. Also the people that visit your blog feel that they can contact you anytime because they have in front of them a person and not a corporation. So, in the end, social power is all about how strong are you as an individual and how do you think and express your opinions.

Of course that even thou the social media world has some rules that are known to us from our daily lives you also have to realize that it’s very different in some aspects. Developing an online business and a social media presence involves a constant activity and lots of patience to get results.

What the Internet would look like without Social Media ?

Tough question. Without social media the only ways to market would be the traditional ones applied to the web. Maybe the e-mail marketing would be greatly spread. But then again how would the Internet would look without these social websites that are hosting everyday millions of posts, comments, image and video sharing, millions of articles ? The need to socialize of people would finally lead to the creation of interacting software. Communication channels would be transformed in discussion rooms. Soon, information sharing servers would appear and next, social networks. So if social media channels would not exist today I’m pretty sure that in two years maximum would be invented. Maybe the hits would not have the same names because FaceBook would be a company that sells photo albums or Twitter would be a company that fights for preservation of birds. But all these social services that are all around us right now would be created – if all this would not exist.

Do you think it would be possible ?

All the content we develop right now is to be shared on all these social networks. For whom we would write if this would not exist ? Believe me : if we would not have social networks we would invent them. If you think otherwise please share. I’d love to read your comments bellow.

I like it very perceptive. I imagine a Internet without Social Media would seem boring after having the experience we have today. Would anyone want to go back to an Internet where Brochure sites ruled the day. I doubt it, I know I would’nt.

I do wonder however, when the Internet will be overwhelmed by content if that is even possible. Personally I am maxed out at reading the net and there is so much I would still like to read .. but have to work sometime

The Internet without Social Media would be like a car without gas. It will still be there, showing the potential for something, but without being ignited by – and consuming some – social power or direct human interaction, it would be useless.

The old method of advertising is interactive marketing. The term is misleading. Most people think it means that there is some type of interaction on the part of the person advertised to, and there is. But, it is not conversational. Instead, the advertiser wants you to interact with their campaign in a specific set of steps. Following the call to action and visiting a website for instance. It’s the push to make you do something. Live this image. Buy this now.

Social Media Marketing is just the opposite. It’s the pull of the tribe. The tribe already has your trust so the actions they take are ones you align with. On a larger scale, it’s the allure of belonging in the group as you take action together. “I am doing this so why don’t you do it with me?” On an individual level, the attraction is to behave the same way to get the same results that benefits your fellow tribeswoman or tribesman. “She looks hot! I want to look hot too. I want to go to her hairstylist” and you do. Social Media Marketing uses the power of attraction.

While advertising tries to use the same tactic, with a billboard for instance, of a gorgeous woman telling you the benefits of the salon, it doesn’t have the same impact because it’s pushing you to go. It is not pulling you in as a trusted friend. Your friends have your best interests at heart and advertisers do not. Social Media Marketing is based on building trust and that foundation will make Social Media a dominant player in Marketing.

Social marketing is a quite new thing after all, so I guess it is possible to do without. The first online marketers released their sites in 1996 and have managed to make a lot of money without social sites.

Many people fail at social marketing because they promote only their own content. The point is to share good things from around the web.

@Tom At The Home Business Archive – Thank for your feedback. I agree with you : if you are only broadcasting your own content then you’ll have zero results. Even if you are not posting only your content, if you are not interacting with your social friends or followers then the results are not that good.
