These days everyone has a blog : it’s free or dirty cheap and it’s a place where you can publish whatever you want. There are no restrictions : you don’t need a publisher anymore. You don’t have to wait for someone else to approve what you write. Just like Nike, you could say : just do it.
But the question that pops in my head is : could this be true ? I can publish whatever I want ?
The answer is not that simple as you may think. Yes, you can write what you want, when you want and publish it the way you wanted. But … would you want to do it like this ? Having no responsibility on what you post is like filling a library with all the nonsense and then when someone wants a really good book he or she would have to search trough millions of small papers in order to find it.
If let’s say you post all the things you can think of … just like that : all the nonsense and small things that really don’t interest nobody. When you will want to be serious and start blogging for real and maybe build a business, how many people do you think would be interested in what you have to say ? They’ll do a short Google search and see all the stupid things you said over the years. How do you think you will convince them that you are a changed person that now has something to say ?
Blogging in order to send out a message is not an easy thing to do. You have to be consistent in style and ideas … and you’ll have to do it in a constant way over time. So, you should think twice before start blogging.
The first question you should ask yourself is : do I really have something to say ? Or, I decided to blog just because it’s fancy and all my friends are doing it … so why should I not participate to this ? It’s just like in real life where you don’t open your mouth to say stupid things.
Another thing that you have to question is this : “how many would be interested in what I have to say ?”. Why do you have to ask yourself this question ? Because blogs are made to be public : if you want a personal thing just keep a journal. Blogs are created when you want to say something to the world and you think that the world would like to read about it.
If you have a good idea then you will be ok. The most important thing about a blog is what kind of information it sends out. It doesn’t matter how you do it : if you can write then write, if you can’t write then use video blogging or podcasts or even drawings. The important thing is to get your great idea out.
What do you think about this and about the impact bad blogging could have on you over the years ( we no longer have secrets in front of Google) ?
Well said Toma
I started my blog so that keen photographers could see the working of professional photography… then i decided i needed to use it as a promotional tool so it’s metamorphosising into a somewhat different animal but underlying that notion is one if wanting to impart worthwhile knowledge to the wider world. Which of course can happen through visuals alone, and not necesarily requires words… Google will disagree!
