How do you think John Wayne and Kirk Douglas would do it ?
I’ve recently saw a good old movie with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. The movie’s name is The War Wagon and it kept me in front of my tv from the moment it started up until the end. They don’t do movies like that anymore. Back then you had to have something special to succeed : you had to think and to use some kind of tactics. Back then you had to use your brain not your muscles or the power of money.
The War Wagon
This movie is from 1967 but what happens there is the same story no matter what year you are. People will always want “the gold”. What is so different about it ? Tactics. In this movie 5 men try to steal the gold from an armored wagon that is heavily guarded by 28 men with rifles and guns and another 5 inside the wagon. Maybe you’ll wonder how John Wayne and Kirk Douglas will do it. They used their brains. Come up with a simple plan to isolate the wagon from the 28 men that guard it and then they only had to deal with those other 5 men inside it. So you see how a simple move can make you stand out from the crowd and how you can learn to separate the the gold from it’s keepers.
We forgot about tactics
Just like the new movies where it’s more about special fx and muscles we also forgot about what a good planing would do. All this talk about social media and blogging and web marketing is too much to be taken all at once. You are so amazed of what Twitter could do for you or how Youtube, Facebook and Flickr could help you promote your business or how can Digg, Delicious, Reddit, Technorati, Stumbleupon, Flur can help your websites get crawled faster by Google that we forgot about tactics and strategies and planing. We plunge into all this social media without planing how we are gonna use it in order to help us.
Plan ahead but analyze first
The importance of good planing is something that should not be ignored no matter what : it doesn’t matter if it’s about a trip you’re gonna take or a weekend with your family or your business. You should also plan ahead. The reason why you should do it is because planing means that you thought of what might go wrong and what to do in that situation and how to make it go right. Planing is very important but it’s not the first thing you should do. In order to be able to make a decision you have to analyze the problem first. You have to realize what are the problem’s data and what is the question on which you have to find an answer.
Develop a theme based on your analysis
In order to stay consistent about it you need to define a general theme of what you want to do or to achieve. Without that you’ll end up chasing multiple subjects and not getting the highest of them. Just by thinking of a theme you end up planing ahead what that theme might be about : that is because it’s natural for us to try and explore in order to define. A good analysis will allow you to take the correct decision or at least to have a much more complete image of what the situation is and what you could do.
Conclusion
After all the trouble they got into John Wayne and Kirk Douglas almost lost everything at the end of the movie : they only remain with just a small portion of the gold. So you see that even a good planing if it’s not followed by a little bit of luck then is very hard to succeed.

Toma,
Interesting angle to your blog post and now I have a new movie to add to my Netflix queue!
Just blanketing all the social media sites without a plan is indeed not the best approach. Spending a little time with each social media site first to figure out if it falls into your plan is an approach I think works well.
Thanks,
Brent
@Brent Haeseker Thank you for taking the time for this comment. This is how I see it : analyze – plan – go for it
Great sentiment in your post here, but overall it strikes me as vague. Are you speaking about some social media pundits in particular? Also, I’d recommend running your posts through a word processor ahead of time to eliminate bad spelling–your excellent ideas are belied by some glaring errors.
@Allan McDogall
I was talking about tactics in general : something like it’s always good to think before you act. I’m having the impression that these days we act first and then we start to think.
PS : I have to change my word processor. Mine doesn’t show any mistakes and you are not the first who tells me about that.
Thank you.
