How to choose your domain name

Author Toma    Category SEO Tips     Tags

Choosing your domain name is far more important then some people might think. And the simple reason for that is because the domain name can get you free traffic from the search engines if it matches the search terms. So it’s traffic that you don’t need to do anything for it. Of course that it’s not enough to have a web site and a good domain name because if you don’t update your website content constantly then you’re not gonna be in searches.

Many people when choosing the domain for their website are always thinking first to the name of their company. DON’T . Unless you are world wide known like Microsoft or Dell or many others. Instead try and think of the main thing your company sells. Of course that if you are thinking long term then you should also buy the domain name that matches your company name : who nows, maybe some day you will be world wide known.

Depending on what you want to sell on your web site or advertise and where the traffic should come you should choose the domain extension. For example if you are running a news web site that it’s in English and the content is addressed to the entire world then you should go for a .com domain. But if you are selling something for example only in Romania then a domain .ro it’s best suited. That is because people will search for local web sites first (by local I mean Romanian web sites – .ro). Google offers google.ro and giving the fact that Google has the largest piece of the search market you should pay attention to that.

So, my advice is to choose a domain name that best reflects your business and your activity and if you can afford it you should also buy the name of your company. Also for protecting you from those who want a piece of your success you should buy the domains with .ro , .com, and .eu if you are from Romania for example (the same principle is applying to other countries as well).
