Choosing the keyword phrases for your website is only half of the equation. The other half is knowing how to use these keyword phrases efficient on the web page. It is a common mistake to overlook some aspects on where the use of your keywords might improve your rankings. Another thing that is very important is that keywords are important both for content and HTML code.

How many keywords to target on a page

Giving the fact that Google looks at the density of your keywords on the web page this means that you can’t use too many keyword phrases on a page. And this is common sense : you can’t target too many keywords. I usually target one main keyword phrase and along with it I also target at most two secondary keywords. Of course that in each article on the website I’ll use the main keyword that best describe the theme of the web site.

How to use keyword phrases in the HTML code

Many times this aspect is overlooked. The presence of your main keyword phrases in the HTML tags (code) is imperative. These are the most important HTML tags that has to contain the main keyword phrases on your page:

  • the <title> tag : if it’s possible to start with the keyword phrase, have no more then 65 characters, be different for each web page; don’t place the name of your company at the beginning of the tile unless you are world wide known; the titles should also be careful designed so the user click on it : many web pages do not receive clicks even if they rank better because it has poor titles that don’t promise anything.
  • the <h1>, <h2>,.. subheading . Having the main keyword phrase in the first subtitle reinforce the fact that the web page is really about that keyword
  • the links on the page should contain the keywords as a link text : <a href=”keyword-phrase.html” title=”keyword phrsae” >keyword phrase</a> . It is very important to use all the elements on a link tag especially if this is a link to your web page from another website
  • the dropdown boxes from your page could contain the main keyword phrase <form><option>keyword</option>…</form>
  • urls going out from your page; <a href=”www.keyword-phrase.com“>keyword-phrase</a> - the idea behind this kind of linking is that this is the best way to link : from a page that talk about a keyword phrase to another web site that talks about the same keyword
  • the files, directories, images that are on the web page should contain in the name the keywords
  • images have a property called ALT that even if it’s not specified at least has to be blank; ideally will have <img src=”file-path/keyword-phrase.jpg” alt=”keyword-phrase” />
  • if you link web pages on your website from static text within your content you should link only pages that talk about the same thing

How to use keyword phrases in the content of the page

It is very important to have a subtitle on the web page before the article starts. That subtitle should contain the main keyword phrase and be in h1 tags. Then in the first paragraph in the first 20 words you should use the main keyword phrase that is also present in the <title> and <h1> tags . Don’t be afraid to use the H1 or H2 tags if you don’t like how they format the text because you can style this by the use of CSS. The last paragraph of the article should also contain the main keywords. Of course that it’s best to try to use the main keywords through the page in different forms : plural, genre – this really transmits the idea that this page is about the main keywords.

Tools to verify the keywords and relevance

These are a few free tools that I use to check pages :

Conclusion

Basically if you use your keywords as state it above then your content should be SEO friendly. The main thing now is be very careful and clever on how to choose your keyword phrases for each page.
