How to use Twitter : Tips from Twitter Users

I’ve recently posted an article on social media called Social Media Success Depends on How Human You Are in which I expressed my opinion about social media tools in general. What I wrote in that article was basically that you need to act and behave like a real human in order to get the benefits from using the social networks tools. So even if you are using a blog or Twitter or FaceBook, Flickr, YouTube, Viddler, Digg or any other website that offers some kind of social interaction your actions should be human.

Why Twitter ?

After writing that article I thought to ask a question on Twitter that sounds like this :

What is your best tip or advice on how to use Twitter ? And here on the left are the answers I got from Twitter users.

You may be wondering why I choose Twitter. The main reason is because I consider Twitter to be one of the most interactive social networks. The answers you get to a question are instant, the interaction is maximum, it gives you the possibility to test different products or different ideas or different marketing ideas. Having only 140 characters to present your idea it kinda forces you to think harder about what words to use and how to use them so that you express the right thing. Another great thing about Twitter is represented by the possibility to get traffic from it. This is a direct consequence of the level of interaction that is achieved by speaking directly to your followers.

And in some way I think this is the secret of Twitter : keep your followers active.

That way you’ll be able to communicate thoughts, links or just have a chat. And when people are talking daily and exchanging ideas a certain trust is build between them. When people trust you then they’ll click on the links you share and that is the way they end up on your blog.

How I use Twitter

As you can imagine (from the article I talked at the beginning) my opinion is you have to be human. This is the main thing you have to do. Imagine that you are in town with your friends at a beer and you’re talking. I don’t think that you’ll talk only about you or only about your work because if that is the case next time you’ll not have with whom to get out to a beer. So, what do you do ? You engage into conversation, you express your opinions, from time to time say something about you or about your work, you accept the opinions of your friends, you never talk bad things about one of your friends and in the end you say Bye, see you soon. That should be the way you act when you are in any social network.

I like to share as much as I can and to get involve in as many conversations I can. Of course that this doesn’t mean that you should spam. Your comments should be constructive and should bring something new to the conversation.

I like to divide my posts on Twitter like this :

  • 50% engaging in conversations with others

  • 50% sharing links like so :

    • 70% links to articles I find on the web

    • 30% links to my own content

I agree wholeheartedly with your thinking here. I’m still pretty new to Twitter. When I first started, I just posted links to my blog articles and other interesting stuff, as well as a few jokes or quips here and there. After reading more about Twitter, I realized I was “broadcasting” instead of having a conversation.

So yesterday, I did things differently. I still posted a blog link, and a few other interesting tidbits, but the majority of what I did on Twitter was look at three or four of my followers’ profiles and engage them in conversation about them and what’s interesting to them. It was fun! I went to their sites and blogs and got to know them. And the result, I felt like I made friends… and without asking they went to my website and joined my email newsletter. Three new subscribers, just like that.

I think I’m starting to get it now. But it does take time. Instead of focusing on “numbers” I’m now just making one friend at a time.

@Todd You are right. It takes time. I usually establish the contact right when the person starts following me. If I decide to follow back then I’ll check his blog or his website and send him a DM with some comment on that. I think it’s very important to maintain your followers active.

Sensational post, I like your writing style! I’ve added http://blog.tomabonciu.ro/ to my feed reader, and will be reading your posts from now on. Just a quick question – did you design your header image yourself, or have it done professionally? If you had it done by a professional, who was it?
