The HTML tags are the core of the web page and first thing to optimize for search engines. With all the interest in SEO and with this continuous preoccupation that our website to be optimized for search engines sometimes we tend to overdo things or overlook some important ones. You should not go overboard with some techniques because you are passive of spam and you can’t afford to overlook some important things that could determine your ranking.
The myth behind the meta tags
I’ve seen people that never use metatags on their page, other use it the same through the entire website. Is it good to have it on the web page or not ? There are two meta tags that Google will ignore : the “description” and the “keywords”. The reason is that people tend to abuse these properties and specified keywords that are not really targeted on the page or provide a description that again doesn’t fit the theme. Still, I recommend using the “description” metatag because when you’re doing a search on the Internet after the title of the page the search engines display the description you provide or the first paragraph of the page. And much more if you have the searched keywords in your description the search engine will also highlight it. The last reason to still use it is that it can provide good information to the user on what the page is about and it can determine a click on the link. The other meta tags are NOT ignored by Google and have great use, determining how Google index your page and how it classify it.
HTML tags ignored by Google
The most obvious I think it’s the comment tag : <!– comments –>. The on page CSS <style> is also ignored along with the <script> tag. You should also check the HTML tags that are important for Google so you can fully understand how to proper use the HTML tags.
Do not use excessive linking on your page
If you think that having multiple links to the same page from one of our articles will count many times in backlinks for that page then you’re wrong. Google will count only once the links pointing to the same web page from the same article. Also, the links pointing to the same page that are on, are ignored by Google and can’t build up reputation for that particular page. Any type of graphics and multimedia will not help you get better ranking. The visual effect can’t be neglected but realize that it won’t get more traffic.
Conclusion
In the end I think it’s best for you to know what counts and what not in search engine optimization because this will ensure that your chances to obtain better ranking will increase.

Thank you for reading
Regarding your point on META description, this is one of the most overlooked tags. Based on my own limited research and talking to clients, the description that shows ina search engine result is a pretty powerful statement. Without it, Google just chooses words at random – not nearly as elegant and professional looking.
