Improve search engine optimization with correct redirect pages

Author Toma    Category SEO Tips     Tags

Redirect pages used in the right way can help your web site to rank better and to be indexed correctly by search engines. That is why a proper knowledge of the use of redirect pages is a must for any web master or web designer if he wants to offer the client a professional web design service. There are two types of redirect pages : the first type involves page redirection 301 and 302 and the second type is the 404 redirect page. The difference between those two types of redirect pages is that the first type is used when the web site is moved permanent or temporary on another domain and the second type of redirect page, the 404 one, is used when the user tries to access a page that doesn’t exists on that server.

The 301 and 302 redirect pages have a great importance in proper indexing of the web site by search engines. It also helps to the proper transfer of properties such as PR and links to the new domain. The difference between the two redirect pages is that the 301 page refers to a permanent redirection and the 302 refers to a temporary redirection. If you’ll try to use a 302 redirection page to redirect users to the new domain where you moved your web site and the movement is permanent then the search engine will never update the index for your new domain plus that the new domain will not receive the properties of the old web site.

The 404 redirect page is created for the purpose to offer a visual answer to the user when he tries to access a page that doesn’t exists or doesn’t exists no more. The 404 redirection page can be created as you want but to ensure a consistency in design it should be build around the template of the web page.

All the redirect pages ensures better ranking and proper indexing of the pages in a search engine. It can be created as 404.shtml for example containing the proper code. So in conclusion use the 301 and 302 redirect pages when your web site is moved permanent or temporary on another domain and 404 redirect page to respond when the user tries to access a page that doesn’t exists on the web server.
