I think that creating a web business it’s one of the hardest things to do. It’s not like a classic business where you pick a good spot with lots of daily traffic and you have half of the equation solved. Trying to get traffic to your web business it’s all about marketing, promoting and patience.

Indeed, why use a blog ? You may say. There are two big reasons, in my opinion : technical and content based. The technical reason is that a blog it’s a very simple CMS to install, configure and use. You don’t need any special knowledge : you just follow the instructions and that’s it. The content reason it’s related to the fact that it’s very easy to create and sort content into categories. You can also have tags attached to your content so it’s easy to find. One way to market your business is writing articles related to the theme of your website. Since a blog makes publishing your content on the web so easy I think it recommends it to be the perfect tool to use.
How can a blog help your business
It’s good to have new content on your website that it’s fresh, original and keyword rich. This is the starting point. To be able to do all the other things you need to do for SEO first you have to have content. Giving the fact that a blog it’s so easy to update it’s perfect to use it. Your entire website could be a blog and have pages about yourself and your services, contact and news pages. Being so easy to use a blog let you concentrate on the real important things : like keyword analysis and article planing to target those keywords. As you can see, it all gravitates around the fact that a blog it’s easy to use and update. You can target so many keywords in your articles and still have more then one big theme based on your categories.
Market your blog so it markets your business
Having a blog that is constantly updated it’s only the start. You have to spread the word about it. Engage in forum discussions that match your theme and post on different theme related blogs. It will take a while to get users come to your blog and to obtain good rankings but if you stick to your plan it will come. Remember that good content is the keystone. Starting from there will get people link to you, if your website deserves it, and income links translate into good ranking. Good ranking makes people find you on the Internet with the use of search engines. That leads to relevant traffic (if you targeted the correct keywords) and finally to sales.
Conclusion
I know that writing about it sounds easy but is not : and I know this by my own personal experience. Your success is based on patience, creating good content, spread the word about it, get inlinks and good rankings, traffic and sales. The only role a blog has in all this equation is because it’s very easy to use and to publish your articles on the web.

One thing you might add to your conversation about getting blogs good rankings is to make sure that you localize each entry.
By localization I mean that every entry should have a geographical descriptor of some sort. This way the SEs will be able to give added weight.
Think of it this way…
Say you write a great blog article on, say, sex appeal.
With millions upon millions of pages with this keyphrase your chance of getting ranked is zero.
But…
How about “Joe Smith had more sex appeal than anyone in Tampa, Florida could tolerate.
Bingo… search for sex appeal in Tampa and you have a hit.
Yes, you are right. Adding a zone does help a lot. The problem appears when the business offers it’s products to an entire country or when it doesn’t matter from where the orders come.
