SEO Experiment: Checking If You Target the Keywords You Say You Target

seo-experiment-check-your-keywordsI want to try a more engaging article related to SEO. The idea is to get you, the reader, involved. And here is what I was thinking about.

You leave me a comment, where you say what your website is and a maximum of 5 keywords you say you target in your website and I’ll take a look and see if you really target those keywords. I’ll perform a quick analysis of your website to see how you use those keywords. Then I’ll post a comment and tell you the result.

There is only one rule and one limitation:

  1. The Rule: The comment must be posted on my blog, in the comment section of this article
  2. The Limitation: I’ll do my best to answer as many comments as possible. And I will do this only for the comments posted on 20 December 2009 and 21 December 2009.

Depending on the success of this experiment I’ll think about similar articles in the near future. Hope to see your comments on my blog. Also, if you find this article useful you may also want to subscribe to my blog and receive my daily articles in your e-mail.

    Interesting idea! I find my own site very challenging for seo keywords.

    sustainable living
    beeswax candles
    natural soap
    chair caning
    olive oil lamps

    All targetting Canada more than elsewhere

    I’m game for this! nice idea as long as my email is not mis-used! (just kidding ;-) )

    Stereoscopic 3d
    Digital advertising
    Experiential marketing
    Culture and Heritage Tourism
    Creative Technology

  • Toma December 20, 2009 at 11:24 pm

    @Clyde (I’ll grade the targeting of each keyword on a scale from 0 to 10)

    Stereoscopic 3d (the phrase is used only in one title and in some links placed only on footer) – 2

    Digital advertising (the whole phrase is not present in titles or any other element; the only presence are represented by separate words) – 0

    Experiential marketing (the whole phase is present only in a pdf file) – 0.5

    Culture and Heritage Tourism (the whole phrase is not present in titles or any other element; the only presence are represented by separate words) – 0

    Creative Technology (the whole phrase is not present in titles or any other element; the only presence are represented by separate words) – 0

    Basic places to consider place your keywords for a certain page: title, subtitles, first paragraph, text content, alt property of images, name of the files, anchor text pointing to other pages of your website.

    I hope this very quick analysis helped you.

    4 women

    @Bill Kisse – I get a 403 Forbidden error
    @Jane – Your website doesn’t work for me. I get a “Problem loading page” every time I try to access it

    —————————————————————
    (I’ll grade the targeting of each keyword on a scale from 0 to 10)
    —————————————————————
    @tinagleisner

    home maintenance – present in description metatag, on the title of a page containing a pdf and when it’s used in content there is no title support – 2

    home repair – present only as a category and tag name – 1
    home improvement – present only in category title – 1
    home owner – present in title, text and tag. The grade is between 3-4. The main problem is that with a competition of 90 million this equals to 0

    —————————————————————
    @Wilma Howe-Bennett – Your website has only 3 pages indexed. The home page is not indexed by Google. So, as far as Google is concerned you’re not using the keyword “NORM removal” in your website

    NORM removal – 0
    new technology – this is a bad choice because it’s formed by a word and a modifier.The competition is huge – 0
    disruptive technology – not present on the site – 0
    100% green – not present on the site – 0
    100% ecologically sound – not present on the site – 0
    —————————————————————
    @Geoff Clegg – the website has only 8 pages (this is the big problem)

    Health and Safety Consultants – present in all the titles of your pages (all the pages share the same title) – 0
    Company health & safety policies – not present on site – 0
    Workplace risk assessments – present only once in the site – 0
    Display Screen Equipment risk assessments – present only once in the site – 0
    Health and safety audits – not present on site – 0
    —————————————————————
    @Rohit

    All your keywords are between 3 and 5. The thing is that what you do is a very easy to spot pattern. For each keyword, you create an article, place the keyword in title, in the text and in a link that is pointing to the home page. This tactic I don’t think it’s going to help you, because you’re creating confusion. Try and create groups of articles, in a pyramidal structure.
    —————————————————————
    @Jennifer

    real estate – this is such a broad term (955 million competition). Present in tags, categories and one article. The grade is between 2 and 3. But give the competition this equals to 0
    real estate marketing – present only in tag and category – between 0 and 1
    real estate education – present only in category – between 0 and 1
    real estate resources – present only in tag – between 0 and 1
    —————————————————————

    The conclusion is that I’ll write an article explaining what does it mean to target a keyword. I really hope that I offered you some points to think about, because if you are serious about your web presence for your businesses you should consider learning some basic SEO.

    @Jane – Your website doesn’t work for me. I get a “Problem loading page” every time I try to access it
    ——————
    This is very worrisome! I have no idea what the problem is as I’ve checked it in Firefox and Explorer (it shifts over to the right in Explorer, which I can’t seem to fix). In my mucking about trying to find out what’s wrong, I’ve managed to add a bunch of XHTML errors, which I’m now trying to fix.
    Thanks for trying! I was looking forward to your evaluation :-(
