@Jay Koch - Thanks a lot for your comment. I totally agree with you when saying that "... you have to have a lot of followers in order to make the great connection" and "Twitter is not a passive medium. You can’t just watch it like CNN."

I follow lots of people and most people follow me back. I make the most amazing connections at unexpected times. Just this week, I re-tweeted a quote I liked. A woman commented on my tweet, and I checked out her Twitter profile. Surprise, she lives only about 30 miles from me. I started conversing with her and she is going to be a marketing coach for me.

But, I would not have found her if I had not followed lots of people. Sure, you follow a lot of people you won't really connect with, but you have to have a lot of followers in order to make the great connection.

I used to follow with little thought. I ended up with a lot of people who are not of interest to me. So, I search on Twitter.com for keywords on topics that interest me. I use twitter.grader.com to find people in my areas of interest who are highly ranked. Then, I follow people who follow them! I figure that those people are likely to have similar interests, too.

Twitter is not a passive medium. You can't just watch it like CNN. You have to interact with people. Said in another way, you GET to interact with people in an immediate and personal way. I have become very good friends with a handful of people talking to them 140 characters at a time.
