Traffic VS Relevant Traffic
Web traffic is something that every web site owner wants. It’s like a drug : we always want more and more. But the question that appears is : more traffic is gonna help us making more sells or will help us make more money from our advertiser program or from Adsense ? Well, the answer depends directly by the type of web site you run. If you plan to make money by selling ad space on your web site or by adsense then you probably want more traffic. But if run an e-commerce web site then you probably want to get more targeted users rather then people that came accidentally on your web site.
What generates “Just” Traffic
All the users that come to your site generate web traffic. We can receive this traffic by direct typing the name of our web site or from clicking on a link on another web site, blog, forum, adword or other payed advertise or by the results in a search engine. The traffic resulted from search engines should provide the most of your traffic. Usually people start by searching on the Internet what they want to find or what they think it’s the solution of their problem. If your web site appears in searches on the first page or on the second one then you’ll probably get traffic from those people. We all want more web traffic on our web site and the less expensive way to get it is by writing good content, post it on our web site or on our blog and hope that we will be in searches. Many times writing an article is the result of an analysis on the keywords that are targeted : if they generate enough search volume and what is the competition on search engines for those words. Usually you will target keywords that you think some one that wants what you have to offer on your web site would use. You will always target more broad terms and by the use of modifiers you’ll target more specific terms that only a connoisseur would use. Sometimes people arrive by mistake on your web site. Other times you target keywords that are not that relevant to your web site. For example I’m offering web services and web site optimization services. Someone that searches on Google for “web design” is not that important to me. But someone that searches for “web design services” or “web design prices” or “affordable web design” might interest me. The reason is because when someone looks for “web design” they could search for web design tips, courses, jobs and many many other things. But when someone uses the modifier “services” or “company” or “prices” it means that person really knows what they’re looking for. Of course that I will use keywords like “web design” in my content but the traffic that I might get by these keywords is not that important to me.
What generates Relevant Traffic
As I said before when you appear in searches from a search engine for some precise keywords then you get relevant traffic. Traffic that you get from Adwords is relevant if you targeted relevant keywords for your business. If you are selling perfumes for kids then the traffic that could come from targeting keywords like “perfume” or “kids” or “gifts” would have small relevance. But someone who searches for “perfumes for kids” or “special gifts for kids” or “special Christmas gifts for kids” is a potential buyer. If he also adds the modifier “online” or “online shop” then you have an almost buyer. That is the relevant traffic.
Where do you need Relevant Traffic or just Traffic
You will always want to get relevant traffic to your web site. That means that you are doing your job well by targeting the correct keywords. But depending on the type of web site you run you could make use of just traffic. If you are running an e-commerce web site then you always want relevant traffic because you are making money only when you make a sell : and you make a sell when people that know what they are looking for come to your web site. Other times you have a web site that produces money by the use of Adsense and as long as people click on your Adsense it doesn’t matter where the traffic comes. Irrelevant traffic or accidental traffic comes when you don’t target relevant keywords or in other words the keywords that best describe your web site. When you are not asking yourself the question : “If someone wants the type of content that I have to offer then they will type this keyword to get that content ?” then you target the wrong keywords. There are moments when targeting the wrong keywords will only get people angry because they ended up on your web site and you don’t have anything that could interest them.
Conclusion
You always should ask your self if the keywords you want to target are relevant for your web site. Relevant traffic is far more productive then just traffic. If you are using a software like Google Analytics you can see what keywords generate traffic to your web site and you can judge for yourself if those words are really relevant to your web site and draw the conclusion if you are having more relevant traffic or just traffic.
